Return! Return!

What’s a “Yankee Bajan?”

In some ways, the production and story of Yankee Bajan,” written by Linda Parris-Bailey and directed by Dahlak Brathwaite, is about identity. In other ways it’s about riding waves and weathering storms. It reminds us that making decisions is hard work; coming of age is hard work; raising a family is hard work. And within that we must look inward, have clear values and seek wise counsel.

Historic, indeed. Yes, the story illustrates a special cross-cultural connection between Barbados and the Carolinas. And it speaks to the diaspora of Black people and families wanting to find, create and have a sense of home.

So, what does it mean to return home? Perhaps, it is about re-turning inward, first.
