SUMMARY:Crowns
DESCRIPTION:Art Forms & Theatre Concepts\, Inc. presents “CROWNS” by Regina Taylor and directed by Art Gilliard. \nThis gospel musical is set to lift your spirits as it tells a moving and celebratory story in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of Black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young black woman who has come down South to stay with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. \nThe production shows that hats tell tales concerning everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning. There is a hat for every occasion\, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms\, and the tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery to the New Testament and current fashion. First Ladies are known for their crowns “hats\,” please show your support. \nThis Gospel inspired production will have you tapping and clapping as it offers a look into the story of the dramatic role hats play in people’s lives.

SUMMARY:Family Day! | As Any Means Are Necessary
DESCRIPTION:Join the Halsey Institute staff and tour guides for a fun-filled family-friendly celebration of the exhibition Demond Melancon: As Any Means Are Necessary. Enjoy guided tours for your family\, art activities that explore the exhibition\, kid-friendly snacks\, and more! \nThe Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to announce the first solo museum exhibition of innovative artist Demond Melancon. \nDemond Melancon (b. 1978) works solely with a needle and thread to sew glass beads onto canvas.  He began this practice in 1992 when he first became part of a more than 200-year-old culture known as the Black Masking Culture of New Orleans. Big Chief Demond Melancon is well known for creating massive Suits as a Black Masker. \nHis Suits are sculptural forms based on the size of his body which are composed of intricate\, hand-sewn beadwork revealing a collective visual narrative.  In 2017\, Melancon pioneered an emerging contemporary art practice using the same beading techniques he’s been refining over the past 30 years in the Black Masking Culture. \nAs Any Means Are Necessary will debut a host of new work\, including a completely new type of art object in Melancon’s practice. \nPhoto: A close up view of Demond Melancon’s Bras-Coupé

SUMMARY:Step Afrika! The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence
DESCRIPTION:Charleston Gaillard Center\, International African American Museum\, and MOJA Arts Festival Present \nSTEP AFRIKA!\nThe Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence\nFollowing their extraordinary presentation of Drumfolk in 2023\, Step Afrika! returns with their signature work The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence which charts the story of African Americans moving from the rural South to the industrial North to escape Jim Crow\, racial oppression\, and lynchings in the early 1900s. Inspired by Jacob Lawrence’s iconic 60-panel “The Migration Series” (1940-41)\, this iconic work from the award-winning dance company uses the images\, color palette\, and motifs in the painting series to tell this story through pulsating rhythms and visually stunning movement. As part of its ongoing commitment to presenting Southern stories that have shaped the nation’s history and identity\, the Gaillard has curated this work in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
