SUMMARY:PURE Theatre presents Covenant by York Walker
DESCRIPTION:In the heat of the Deep South\, a missing guitarist reappears a blues legend\, and the town’s whispered fears of a devil’s deal ignite a reckoning far more dangerous than anyone imagined. \nTwo years after his sudden disappearance\, struggling guitarist Johnny “Honeycomb” James returns to his small Georgia town a blues star\, sparking rumors that he may have made a deal with the devil to attain his musical genius. Before long\, however\, it becomes clear he’s not the only one with a secret. Inspired by the myth of Robert Johnson\, this haunting\, Gothic play explores the power of belief and tests the thin veil between rumor and truth. \n“Auspicious… a striking new Southern Gothic work.” —The New York Times \n“Undeniably spooky. Absolutely enjoyable. You’ll be frightened in the best way possible.” —Theatermania \nFEATURING\nZania Cummings*\nTrinity Griffin\nDexter Mitchell\nTonya Nicole*\n& Brandi Smalls\n* PURE Core Ensemble

SUMMARY:Step Afrika! The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence
DESCRIPTION:Charleston Gaillard Center\, International African American Museum\, and MOJA Arts Festival Present \nSTEP AFRIKA!\nThe Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence\nFollowing their extraordinary presentation of Drumfolk in 2023\, Step Afrika! returns with their signature work The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence which charts the story of African Americans moving from the rural South to the industrial North to escape Jim Crow\, racial oppression\, and lynchings in the early 1900s. Inspired by Jacob Lawrence’s iconic 60-panel “The Migration Series” (1940-41)\, this iconic work from the award-winning dance company uses the images\, color palette\, and motifs in the painting series to tell this story through pulsating rhythms and visually stunning movement. As part of its ongoing commitment to presenting Southern stories that have shaped the nation’s history and identity\, the Gaillard has curated this work in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
