SUMMARY:Crowns
DESCRIPTION:Art Forms & Theatre Concepts\, Inc. presents “CROWNS” by Regina Taylor and directed by Art Gilliard. \nThis gospel musical is set to lift your spirits as it tells a moving and celebratory story in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of Black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young black woman who has come down South to stay with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. \nThe production shows that hats tell tales concerning everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning. There is a hat for every occasion\, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms\, and the tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery to the New Testament and current fashion. First Ladies are known for their crowns “hats\,” please show your support. \nThis Gospel inspired production will have you tapping and clapping as it offers a look into the story of the dramatic role hats play in people’s lives.

SUMMARY:Paradise Blue
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic drama by Dominique Morisseau unravels a story about a Detroit neighborhood called Black Bottom\, at the heart of a club district called Paradise Valley\, where a trumpeter called Blue runs a joint they called Paradise\, where he fronts a quartet whose sidemen include a drummer called P-Sam and a pianist called Corn. \nThe bassist has quit\, perhaps because his name was just Joe. With a cleverly designed set\, a steamy plot\, and characters that are hard to forget\, the film-noir-influenced “Paradise Blue” is a riveting and moving play centering on Detroit’s Club Paradise\, a combination jazz club and boarding house that has a lot of conflict. \nThere is conflict between band members\, conflict between Blue\, the owner\, and a woman he loves\, and a woman he despises. These hostilities are accompanied by the inner conflicts of each character\, which intensify as the plot unfolds.

SUMMARY:Wedding Band
DESCRIPTION:Village Rep and Threshold present this spell-binding story by one of the most important playwrights of the 20th Century\, Alice Childress. \nWedding Band – written with great precision and powerful storytelling – gives an emotional portrayal of a relationship between a Black seamstress\, Julia\, and a white baker\, Herman\, in the shadow of the First World War and the 1918 flu epidemic in Charleston\, South Carolina. The couple’s deep love and commitment faces the cruel racism of the Deep South in this revealing portrayal of interracial love\, forced to navigate the societal racism of laws and culture\, along with heartbreaking judgment from their own families and communities. \n“A great deal of compassion…Its strength lies in the poignancy of its star crossed lovers.” -NY Times
